Mudgee and Hill End Gold Rush History By Ian Robinson I live in an area steeped in gold rush history of the 19th century. My farm is on the Meroo River at Avisford which was a massive field of several thousand diggers mostly Chinese. I have nearly 1km of Chinese aquaduct wall on my river frontage that is still mostly intact. And I sometimes conduct tours of the region about the gold rush history. 50km south is Hill End which in its heyday was a town of several thousand, and now a couple of hundred people at most. It is a Historic Town now administered by the NSW Parks & Wildlife Service. There are Quite a few buildings dating back to the 1860's through to the early 1900's. There is a small museum in the town run by NPWS which is good, and many of the old building sites in the town area are well defined by plaques with photos of the buildings that stood there. Just out of the village is History Hill a private museum of the gold rush era that is absolutely fabulous in its portrayal of the era and the lives of the diggers both European & Chinese. I have visited many museums and gold rush sites over the years but have yet to find a better museum than History Hill for the extent of it's exhibitions including a mineshaft that you can enter to understand shaft mining and a collection of stamping batteries that can be operated for groups to see how gold is won from the ore.
