My language lessons By Ian Robinson I struggled for 2 years at school in England with basic Latin and French. Then we moved to New Zealand and I chose not to continue with the Latin and studied French for another 2 years. After leaving school and doing my trade apprenticeship as a motor mechanic I never had much opportunity to use what I had learned until I bought a Peugeot car in 1968 and found that the best workshop repair information was mostly in French so I honed up my technical French words so I could be more efficient with my car repairs and those of my growing list of Peugeot customers. At this stage of my life being semi retired I am spending more time on the internet and going to sites of interest with French pages and understanding the main points even though I am far from fluent, and get lost very quickly trying to follow spoken French. Even my 2 years of Latin I now find useful when doing research in other European languges because I can see root similarities which help me understand words a little better. I am too old to want to study a new language but who knows I may still yet decide to at least polish up my French skills.
